Additional Thoughts about Memorial Day

In my last post I said I don’t usually do picnics on Memorial Day. Here’s why: this isn’t a “happy” holiday. This is a day of solemn remembrance for those who have fallen in the line of duty to their country. I always feel so conflicted about eating potato salad and hitting the pool in those circumstances, you know?

But life has been rough lately. And it’s rare I’m not working on a weekend or have a to-do list a mile long. And frankly, we need to be social once in a while, and our neighbors work hard to give people social opportunities here. So we went.

At today’s picnic, I was glad to see that they began by playing a speech honoring fallen service members, followed by a  moment of silence. You could hear a pin drop in that room.

They played an old Memorial Day speech originally
made by Ronald Reagan in the 80s

And actually, it was so nice to meet some of our neighbors. We had really interesting conversations with them. And they had a door prize, these candles, which I won. So when I got home, I lit this candle in memory of those who are gone. That feels appropriate.

One of the candles from a set
I won in a door prize.
I lit it in honor of the fallen and
will let it go all night.
