Following up from THIS post, I wanted to update on our little mystery about the audiobook that started up out of the blue after the device had been asleep for weeks. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, please go to the original post first, then read this one.)
Fred has two possible theories based in technology and its foibles.
The first is that the tablet had sat unused for a while and pushed an update to the Audible app. Once the update pushed, it restarted Audible and resumed at the last place it remembered on that device. That device has an older version of Android that is no longer supported, so who knows what bugs lurk in the firmware when faced with new app updates.
The second theory is similar to the first except instead of an app update, the trigger may have been a power surge. We get a lot of power fluctuations here, and they can wake up a sleeping device…and then the rest of theory #1 could go into effect.
In both cases, Audible has permission to run while the device is locked, so once triggered it could easily begin playing. I’m not sure we can replicate the circumstances and test it, however.
I did go and listen to the passage that got triggered. To address anyone who thought it was a message to me, here are the details:
The book is The Junkyard Druid by M. D. Massey, and the scene that played was one in which the main character, Colin McCool, confronts Larry the Chupacabra for hiding in his bedroom. No spoilers, but McCool had every right to be angry. 😂
Perhaps I’m meant to stitch the Chupacabra next on my Cryptid cross-stitch? 😆
Anyway, I hope I’ve conveyed Fred’s explanation well enough and will let him correct me if not.
I appreciate everyone who weighed in on our little mystery!
